Coes is a graduate of Columbia University, where he was awarded the Bennet Cerf Memorial Prize--the university's writing award. He was also a Fellow at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government.
Coes also worked at the White House unders Ronald Reagan and served as a White House-appointed speechwriter to the Sec. of Energy. He also spent some time working in the oil sector for Boone Pickens.
